With my business now ‘full time’ I really wanted to understand the things that are “killing small business”.
After reading a million and one pages the thing that stood out to me most was “being disorganised”, REALLY?
Often when I think of small businesses I think of the desk in a little office COVERED in paperwork, receipts on those little metal spikes and the person saying ‘hold on, let me just find that’.
After picking this common thread up I thought I would research, My god, I think I read about 1000 tips!
The Top 5 Most Common
1. Your Space/Storage
– Make your regularly used items easy to reach
– Put it back where they belong, faster to find
– Less storage = less space needed = potential less rent
2. “Tame” Emails
– Respond to emails as you open them, don’t let them build up
– Be responsive, set auto replies
– Set up an easy filing system with folders/colours you can use
– Hire someone to respond to emails/enquiries for you
3. Filing
– “Ditch the paper” and store items electronically, the cloud
– Scan/shred paperwork as you get it, don’t let it pile up
– Make the system easy to follow
4. Computer
– Your desktop should have the things you use
– Stay up to date with anti virus
– Save your passwords, faster to log in (you can get an app)
5. Social Media
– Schedule a lot of posts, so you actually post them
– Use a program like hootsuite
– Scheduled Posts = Free Advertising = Business
And after reading all of that, one comment that stood out to me the most was – Treat your business as a real business and stop these things from killing small business.
